Domestic Cat Rescues Baby Bobcats!

3 Very CUTE bobcat KITTENS are given a second chance at life after being adopted by a domestic cat

With a gun in one hand and a sack of bobcat kittens in the other, an Alabama hunter proudly plopped the newborns down on the counter and asked the veterinary assistant to raise them up for him so he could give them to his kids as pets.

The vet tech was stunned, but quickly recomposed herself to tell the hunter she would do it for him so as to rescue the babies from such an awful fate. She immediately began scouring the Internet for an expert in rehab and release. When she called Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue it was agreed that the kittens would come to Florida, be raised for re-release back to the wild and the paperwork began.

It took three days to secure the Florida import permit and time was of the essence. The only kitten formula available to the clinic was one that often causes serious dehydration in bobcat kittens. The second more critical factor was that their eyes would be opening any day and if they were to ever live free it was imperative that they not bond to humans. They never make good pets, but the bonding that takes place during the nursing stage could make them fearless of people and that would get them into trouble as adults.

While Big Cat Rescue President and resident Rehabber, Jamie Veronica, hit the road to begin a 24 hour road trip to rescue the baby bobcats, Big Cat Rescue put out a call to all of the Tampa animal based charities and on all of their social networks that they needed a nursing mother cat who had kittens of her own. Jack Talman of FosteringIsCool.com found a mother cat but her kittens were too old and she was going into heat so there was concern that she may not have milk nor interest for new babies.

Big Cat Rescuer, Merrill Kramer, called on Rick Chaboudy, CEO of Suncoast Animal League in Palm Harbor, FL and he said he thought he had a good candidate. Her name was Bobbi because of her half tail and she had given birth to 6 kittens of her own and then adopted two more. He found foster parents for all but two of the kittens and brought Bobbi and her brood over to see what she thought of diversifying her family.

Introductions like these can be very scary because the mother cat can be overly protective of her own kittens and fatally strike out at the new comers. President, Jamie Veronica, has had a considerable amount of experience in this area though and had taken every precaution to make sure it went as well as it possibly could. Bobbi turned out to be a dream come true for three little orphaned bobcats though. She immediately pulled them in close to nurse and began to bathe them. The little bobcat babies were so startled that they hissed at her!
She ignored their resistance and just kept on loving on them. Once they figured out that this strange smelling “bobcat” mom had the real deal to offer at her breasts, they were in love too.

PostHeaderIcon Commonly Used Baby Skin Care Products Contain Chemicals That Put Infants at Substantial Risk

Infant Skin

The arrival of a new baby brings many concerns and issues for new and incumbent parents. While new parents are faced with a myriad of issues for the first time, incumbent parents have to deal with the information explosion and change in thought on issues which have evolved since their first parenting experience. In addition, when parents have a second child, if the sex is different some of the issues are also new. Chief among the issues for both new and incumbent parents is the proper care of newborn skin. In fact, in many surveys of parents of newborns this issue often ranks first on the list of concerns. For example, in one study published in the journal Bedside Nursing, a group of mothers with infants under the age of 15 months was asked to consider the chief problem they faced in their babies’ first year. The study reports that the most common concern was how to care for their babies’ skin . Not only are new parents unaware of how to treat their newborn’s skin, but most pediatricians are also unaware of optimal infant skin care. Pediatricians are given very little exposure to pediatric dermatology in medical school and residency training. The minimal experience they do have is usually with severely diseased skin, rather than the care of healthy, but vulnerable skin, as is the case with newborns. This topic is also not addressed in most textbooks of pediatric medicine, St. Louis, MO: C.V. Mosby Co., 1983. The lack of clinically available information leads to the continued use of harmful chemicals on infants. Shockingly, while trying to treat the newborn cautiously and safely, the average newborn is exposed to as many as 48 different chemicals without consideration of the potential toxicity of the chemicals or the products that contain them.

A full-term newborn’s skin is only 40% to 60% the thickness of adult skin, thus rendering it considerably more vulnerable and more permeable. The ratio of body surface area to weight is up to five times that of an adult. Thus, the combination of thinner skin and high body surface area ratios render the infant at significant risk with any integrity disruption of the skin. The skin of premature infants is of even greater risk as it has a significantly less developed stratum corneum when compared to term babies. Accordingly they are at even greater risk of thermal instability due to transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Hence, the skin is a critical protectant of the infant for water and thermal control. When improperly cared for, an infant’s skin can be a serious potential health hazard.

Hazardous Ingredients in Baby Skin Care Products

Many commonly used baby skin care products contain potentially very harmful ingredients. Baby skin care products containing dyes (artificial color) should be avoided as many of these artificial colors are known sensitizers and may result in dermatitis and allergic reactions. As this may become a health concern, dyes in products should be avoided. Fortunately, they are not life threatening. However, many of these products contain additional chemicals that may be life-threatening and must be unequivocally avoided. Three commonly used baby skin care chemicals that must be avoided are talc, propylene glycol and glycerin.

Talc

One of the most dangerous ingredients in baby skin care products is talc. It is a common ingredient of the most popular baby powders in use. In a survey conducted by Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, Il, 47% of the respondents used baby powder (talc). Another study of baby powder usage found that 69% of parents routinely applied baby powder to their newborns’ skin. In this study parents used the baby powder because they believed that the powder killed bacteria and yeast and prevented diaper rash, neither of which is a valid action of baby powder. Fewer than 500 of the respondents were aware that aspiration or ingestion of powder (talc) was a health hazard.

Baby powder use has been associated with morbidity and mortality due to inhalation. In a review of talc related infant deaths, it was found that of the 25 cases reviewed, fatality occurred in 20% of these reported cases. Based upon the potential hazard of talc use, baby powders containing talc should be discouraged for infants.

Propylene Glycol and Glycerin

Propylene glycol has been studied for its toxic effects that include seizures, sudden collapse, cardiac arrhythmia and asystole, hepatic damage, renal damage and hyperosmolality. In a survey conducted on neonatal skin care practices, the authors warned against the use of propylene glycol and glycerin on infants. They cited the associated risks of hyperosmolality and seizures. Propylene glycol is the second ingredient listed on the world’s leading baby lotion ingredient disclosure. While baby products containing propylene glycol and glycerin may bear names of “trusted” companies, further review of the wisdom of their use is warranted. Remedy products contain less than 0.30% propylene glycol.

Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is a hydrocarbon that is processed from crude oil. Many people confuse the name as having the connotation of containing vitamins and minerals, rather than its actual meaning which is derived from the earth’s crude oil. Mineral oil is a separation component along with kerosine and gasoline. While the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA), the leading industry lobbying group, has pointed out that mineral oil should not get the same treatment as other hydrocarbons such as kerosene and gasoline, the Commission continues to pursue the closure regulations. While mineral oil has not been studied to the same degree in the same pediatric literature as talc, propylene glycol or glycerin, it is clear that the Commission’s findings will trigger interest in warning against its use on infant skin. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is preparing a ruling that would mandate child-resistant closures on baby oil that contains more that 10% mineral oil. Beyond the available data, with the risk of other hydrocarbons well known in the causation of various cancers, it seems extremely unwise to apply a hydrocarbon to the delicate skin of a baby. This is especially true when no nutritive value of mineral oil to the baby or the skin can be identified, and there are many other, better options for skin ingredients.

Conclusions

While trying to do the best thing for baby, use of many commonly available baby skin care products is actually or potentially harmful to babies. Increasingly, parents are realizing the importance of early exposure of babies to damaging compounds in their first months of life. The marketplace is not only ready, but in many ways, through their purchasing choices for themselves, demanding natural alternatives with better health implications for their baby’s skin. McCord Research has developed a line of skin care products that can be used on babies. The line of skin care products is natural and has eliminated or greatly reduced potentially harmful ingredients. Remedy products, distributed exclusively by Medline Industries, were developed by scientist and physicians. This is the most scientifically developed skin care line in the marketplace and is environmentally-friendly as well as baby-friendly.

PostHeaderIcon Baby Health Issues Are A Big Problem Across The Globe

There are a lot of people that do not know how big an issue baby health is around the world. You have single teens giving birth everyday and they do not know how to take care of a baby properly. You have drug addicted mothers having babies on the streets. Some of these addicts would rather spend the last five bucks they have to get high than spending it on baby medicine or formula.

There is no way possible for us to fix all of these problems. We can try to stop the problem before it starts by educating our teens about how important it is to have safe sex. We can teach our teens about how having a baby can lead to them to not knowing or being able to take care of that child. There is always hope and we have to teach our young adults that they should never give up on their dreams.

If you or someone you know is a teenage mother, a pregnant teen, or a pregnant drug addict you need to know that there are people that can help. There are different types of clinics all around the world that can help you and your baby even if you have no money or insurance. These clinics are run on donations and doctor’s that selflessly volunteer their own time to helping.

After you have received help from one of these clinics it is time for your to start being responsible and grow up enough to be a parent to your baby. A lot of these clinics offer parenting classes so these women can learn how to properly care for their baby and keep their baby healthy. Newborns have an immune system that is not as strong as ours so we have to keep them away from germs and viruses.

Be sure to feed your baby from a bottle that has been sterilized along with a sterilized bottle nipple. Breast feeding can be healthy for your baby but only if the mother is healthy and drug free.

If you have used drugs during your pregnancy you need to be honest with the doctor so that will be better prepared to take care of your baby once it is born. Addiction does not make someone a bad person or even a bad mother if just means they are sick and need help.

PostHeaderIcon Early Caesareans ‘a Health Threat to Babies’

Babies born by planned caesarean section are four times more likely to suffer breathing problems, according to new research. A study of almost 35,000 births found that babies born naturally or by emergency caesarean section had a far smaller chance of developing respiratory difficulties. The earlier in the pregnancy the baby was delivered, the higher the risk of problems, it is claimed.

The study, by researchers at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, is published online today in the British Medical Journal. The authors write: “This study suggests that elective caesarean section leads to a twofold to fourfold increased risk of overall neonatal respiratory morbidity. “Our results also suggest that a significant reduction in neonatal respiratory morbidity may be obtained if elective caesarean section is postponed to 39 weeks gestation.”

The reason for the increased risk is not known, but the researchers speculate that hormonal and physical changes associated with labour are necessary for a baby’s lungs to mature. More women than ever are choosing not to give birth naturally, and almost a quarter of births in Britain are estimated to be by caesarean section, far higher than the 10-15 per cent recommended by the World Health Organisation.

Previous research linked elective caesarean sections to breathing problems in newborns, and also found that mothers themselves are four times more likely to die in childbirth during a caesarean section.

Obesity among children biggest health threat: study

Childhood obesity will be the biggest health threat in coming years, raising death rates from heart diseases, a new study shows. The Danish study has warned that if steps were not taken to reverse the problem, the children of each successive generation were destined to be ”fatter and sicker than their parents”. The finding ‘’suggests that more children than ever before are facing increased risks of CHD in adulthood”, said the team, the Couriermail reported.

The combined health problems will lead to more heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure at a younger age, and even aggressive treatment will not be able to stem the trend. By 2035, the prevalence of heart disease will have increased by 5 to 16 per cent, they estimated.

”Barring a major advance in the treatment of either excessive weight gain itself or its associated alterations in blood pressure, lipid levels and glucose metabolism, current adolescent overweight will have a substantial effect on public health far into the future,” they concluded.

The study tracked more than one quarter of a million school children in Copenhagen from 1930 to 1976, found that overweight children grew up to have more heart problems, particularly the boys. The heavier they were as youngsters, particularly entering their teens, the greater the risk.

For example, a 13-year-old boy who was 11.2 kg above the average weight was found to be 33 per cent more likely than a child of normal weight to have a heart attack or some other problem caused by coronary heart disease by age 60.

PostHeaderIcon Why the gift of touch is vital to the health of babies – Part 1

Before there were things, there was human touch. We have come so far from having nothing that we seem to have forgotten that each new baby is born into the same world that babies have always been born into. Babies’ needs haven’t changed. Ours have.

Newborns still need to feel safe. They need to know their own mothers. They need to familiarize themselves with the way their mother smells, with the sound of her voice, the expressions of her face and the secure rhythm of her heartbeat. No matter what wonderful gadgets and things we have received as gifts for our new little one, the only gift our baby needs is our presence and our undivided attention.

Nearly 60 years ago, Ashley Montagu published the first known article on the importance of touch. In an interview he was quoted as saying,

“The skin is the external brain and nervous system of the body. It is derived from exactly the same embryological layer as is the internal brain and spinal cord. And both are very closely interrelated.

All the messages that this skin receives must go to the internal brain, and the reactions go back to the skin and every other organ of the body. These are not theories, these are observable facts.”

Documented studies (Rene Spitz, Harry Harlow) show the devastating results of deprivation of tactile stimulation for infants, both human and animal. Hearing Ashley Montagu speak on several occasions during my years of young motherhood impressed me greatly. The research Read the rest of this entry »

PostHeaderIcon Is Baby Acne Common Among Newborns?

baby with cleft

In our life, reproduction is one of the essential needs of human besides food, shelter and protection from harm. Most of parents are thrilled to see their newborn come into the world but how many people now about baby acne? If you do come across babies with little red spot on their cheeks, that will be baby acne. Some elderly might calm parents down by knowing that it will go away after some time. It is best to consult doctor or other parents that have tackled the problem before and solve it.

Baby acne is not uncommon among newborns and same like adult acne, it has a special name ‘infantile acne’. Cheek is one of the favorite spot for infantile acne to grow but it may also strike chins and foreheads of newborns. When a baby is born with infantile acne, the period of which it will hang on is from 2 weeks to 2 months. Worst case scenario makes it possibly till 6 months on the infant.

At this moment, some parents might be worried but only time can heal this problem. It can be said to be related to hormone in the baby which is passed down by the mother. However, there are good and bad hormones that are passed down. Not to worry as these hormones will eventually fade away and the only results are clean, rosy cheek of your baby.

PostHeaderIcon Baby Care: -proper Care for Baby Clothing!

If you are a first time parent to-be, there are numerous tasks that must be accomplished before your new baby’s arrival. One important and fun “labor of love” is purchasing baby clothing. However, with such a large selection of baby clothing, you may be asking yourself which of these adorable little items are essentials. This is crucial information to know, as well as their proper care.

“Onesies” are basically baby t-shirts and are a necessary baby clothing purchase. To keep the onesie from creeping up and exposing your baby’s belly, most onesies have easy close snaps. They can be worn alone or as an undergarment. Onesies, also known as rompers, come in basic white, for more details visit to www.baby-care-book.com colored or patterned varieties. For your basics, you should have between 5 to 10 onesies.

Sleepers are one-piece items with long legs and long or short sleeves. They usually have snaps down the legs for easy accessibility for late night diaper changes.

When preparing your basics, you should have between 5 to 8 baby sleepers. These are necessary as it is recommended that a newborn not sleep with thick blankets. This could inadvertently cause suffocation. The best material for both your baby’s warmth and comfort are cotton or fleece sleepers.

For your baby’s requirements, you should purchase between 6 to 8 pairs of baby socks. Although socks are not required in warmer weather, for more details visit to www.create-super-baby.com they should be worn if taking your little one outside in chilly temperatures. They are also indispensable at night if your baby is wearing a sleeper without feet.

Baby socks are made of either thick or thin weaves. You should purchase a combination of both, as thin socks are better if your baby is to wear shoes.

Hats are baby clothing essentials for your little bundle. When taking care of your newborn, it is important to keep them adequately warm. Newborns often have difficulty regulating their body temperature and much of their heat escapes through their head.

It is recommended that your newborn wear a hat through his or her first month of life. After that, it is not as important unless you are taking them outside on a chilly or cold day. For this purpose, you should have 1 or 2 fairly snug, hats for your baby.
When caring for baby clothing, there are two schools of thought. The first is that your little bundle of joy’s clothes should be washed in special detergents to alleviate the risk of skin allergies. There are numerous varieties of mild laundry soaps that are scent and dye-free. Many of these detergents are aimed at the baby market, such as Dreft that boasts “A gentle clean. Just for baby”.

The other school of thought does not believe that “gentle” laundry soaps are required for baby clothing. If your baby’s skin does not react adversely to certain detergents, then a special detergent is not necessary.

Your bundle of pink or blue will not think twice about staining their cutest outfits. Certain formulas, baby food and stains caused by leaking diapers are often difficult to remove from baby clothing. If pretreated before washing, some of the most stubborn stains can be eliminated, leaving the clothing both clean and in pristine condition. One tried and true stain remover is Oxi-Clean. You may want to “audition” or try different stain removers to find the one best suited for your laundry needs.

Before dressing your baby in new clothes, it is essential that you wash them first. Although baby clothing may look fresh and clean on department store hangers, many have come into contact with dirt, little four legged creatures and bugs during the shipping and packaging process.

Minor skin irritations may occur from sizing placed on many pieces of baby clothing. Sizing is used to keep items looking nice until they are purchased.

Getting prepared for your little one’s new arrival is both a joyous and stressful time. Knowing what baby clothing is essential in your little one’s layette and how to properly care for their clothing is one of the many tasks that lay before you. Knowledge is power and being prepared is half the battle.

PostHeaderIcon Primary Pulmonary Hypertension in Babies: What it Is and Why it Occurs

There is a rare but serious disease that can occur in newborns called primary pulmonary hypertension in babies. This disease can be the result of numerous factors, including an event during delivery or a congenital problem, or the reason for the disease may never be known. Although this condition is a rare one, it can have serious long-term implications for your baby. Because of this, it is important to know the basics of primary pulmonary hypertension in babies so that you can know what to look for and what to do if it does occur.

When a baby is in the womb, his cardiovascular system does not work the same as when he makes his entrance into the world. Instead of blood going through the lungs for oxygen, the baby counts on Mom – and more specifically the placenta that Mom provides – to oxygenate his blood. During this time, the pulmonary artery will carry blood back to the heart directly, via a fetal blood vessel that is called the ductus arteriosus.
